About Brightwood Vineyard and Farm

Brightwood Vineyard and Farm is a 100-acre family farm raising pastured goats, laying hens, and produce in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The goal of the farm is to be a diversified small operation that is sustainable both economically and ecologically. The farmers are committed to providing high quality products to local consumers while being good stewards of the land. The farm's Spanish goats are a heritage breed known for their hardiness, ruggedness, and maternal instincts. For over 300 years, Spanish goats were the only breed known across the southern United States and in most other parts of the Americas. At present, however, there are only about 8,000 of these animals left. Brightwood Vineyard and Farm raises about 20-25 goats at any one time that are supplemented with grain during the cold winter months, but for most of the year feast on grasses in the pasture. Our present flock of laying hens are a mix of heritage breeds- Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and Speckled Sussex. They live in a mobile house that is wheeled around the pasture and allows them to run around outside and scratch as they please. The hens produce about 30-dozen brown eggs a week and do a great job of fertilizing the land. Aside from goat meat and eggs, Brightwood Vineyard and Farm also grows a wide range of produce, herbs, and flowers, a full list of which can be found on the farm website. The farm also makes an assortment of jams and jellies from its raspberries, blackberries, and elderberries, which, along with the herbs, are in the process of organic certification. All products are sold from the farm and at various farmers' markets, including the Charlottesville Farmers' Market (Saturdays from early June to October), the Manassas Farmers' Market (Thursdays, through October), and the Christmas Market (Charlottesville, November through December). Drop by in early October, for u-pick pumpkins. BED AND BREAKFAST Our cottage is now open for guests. The newly expanded and renovated cottage is located at the edge of the woods adjacent to one of our pastures, overlooking the confluence of the Robinson River and Spring Branch. You'll hear the gentle sounds of water and the calls of woodland birds from this beautiful vantage point. The cottage provides the ideal environment to unwind and reconnect with Nature. During your stay, you are welcome to participate in farm chores and learn about the daily activities at the farm. You can stroll through our 100 acres of pastures and woods or, if you prefer, just relax and enjoy a quieter pace. We offer the ingredients for a cook-your-own breakfast, including farm fresh eggs, berries in season, jam year round, muffin mix or ready-to-bake yeast breads, Amish butter, coffee and tea, and other farm breakfast specialties. You can eat at your convenience while we are busy with farm chores. The cottage is available year round for rental. Please call to make reservations. Check-in anytime after 3 pm.
