About Indian Creek Angus

Indian Creek Angus is a collaboration between a lifelong, third-generation cattleman, Dennis Barron, and a former environmental studies professor, Carol Corbin. Bringing together their passions and expertise, Dennis and Carol raise grassfed cattle with respect and care, along with the fourth generation farming Barron, Denny, who joined the family business in 2010. They believe that cattle should be bred and raised with high-welfare practices, in a natural and low-stress environment. Carol, Dennis and Denny get to know all the ranch’s cattle, which are crosses of Angus, Murray Grey, Hereford, and Charolais – all breeds which thrive on pasture. “We can talk about each one of them like friends,” says Carol. “They’re not pets, but they’re in our care.” Growing the best grass for their cattle requires a lot of time and money, but it means that their cattle get the best protein and nutrition possible. This is good for their cattle and good for their customers in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia. Carol and Dennis are proud to sell their high quality meat directly to customers at affordable prices so that everyone can access nutritious and high-welfare beef. Carol and Dennis were concerned when they began their grassfed operation in 2009 that they would have trouble finding customers. While these fears ended up being unfounded, their biggest challenges have been keeping their pastures green for their cattle in drought years and keeping the cattle cool during the hot Georgia summers. In 2012, they applied for an AWA Good Husbandry Grant to build a large shade shed out in the pastures to help the cattle stay cool. Dennis observed an immediate improvement in the animals’ welfare when the shed was built: “It was quite a sight to see the cattle head straight into it on the first day we opened the pasture to them.” Carol and Dennis are proud to receive the benefits of the Animal Welfare Approved label and value the support the program can give them to continue improving their operation for the benefit of their animals’ welfare.
