About Gotham Bar and Grill

Gotham Bar and Grill opened in New York City in 1984. Shortly after opening, the Greenwich Village restaurant soon enlisted the services of a young, unknown chef named Alfred Portale. Portale swiftly made a name for himself so much so that within eight months, The New York Times bestowed a three-star rating on the restaurant, a distinction it continues to hold today.

Over time, many talented chefs have passed through the Gotham kitchen including Tom Colicchio, David Walzog, Tom Valenti, Wiley Dufresne and Bill Telepan. Gotham and its kitchen have continued to evolve and with Alfred Portale still at the helm, the food is as innovative as it was 24 years ago.

Setting a standard for excellent service, Gotham has maintained the belief that staff education deepens the rapport between the servers and the clientele. The Gotham dining experience has become a model for restaurants nationwide.

Upon assessing Gotham's reach, Gourmet magazine (February 2001) asserted that Gotham Bar and Grill has inspired restaurants across the country: 'there is not a large city in America without a restaurant operating in a Gothamesque mode.' What was innovative is now classic.
