About Sixth Street Community Center

Sixth Street Community Center has been committed to empowering the Lower East Side community and celebrating its extraordinary diversity. They offer programs assisting low and moderate income residents which build a fulfilling sense of community around basic needs for food, health and education. Their current goals are to (1) further the education of young people in sustainable agriculture, nutrition and health, (2) expand community supported agriculture in the neighborhood by reaching out to more low income households, and (3) strengthen food safety laws through their campaign against genetic engineering.

They run a Youth Program, a CSA, and the Organic Soul Cafe.

The Organic Soul Café is an extension of the Community Supported Agriculture program. The Café began serving dinners in 2009 to show members how to create simple, healthy, delicious meals with their weekly shares of produce. The meals are prepared and served by a team of volunteers, making use of produce from the day's CSA pick-up. Volunteers learn to prepare fruits and vegetables that they may have never seen before.

The Café is open, serving delicious, organic, farm-to-table dinners, on select Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and dishes are reasonably priced, making the Organic Soul Café the best deal for organic food in the neighborhood!
