Sunshine Community Gardens
About Sunshine Community Gardens
Sunshine Community Gardens has been in existence since 1979 with over 150 plots available for lease on 4-acres of land in north central Austin, Texas. The land is licensed to us at no cost through the generous support of Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI). SCG prides itself in providing an urban oasis for local Austin dwellers to grow their own organic food and flowers. SCG is an all volunteer organization with no paid staff. With the assistance of local grower, San Gabriel Valley Farms, our Annual Spring Plant Sale & Benefit the 1st Saturday of March allows us to keep our low rental fees and provide funds for maintenance of our grounds, tools, compost operation and tractor. Thousands of people attend the event looking for the first available Austin area spring transplants for their gardens - heirloom tomatoes, sweet & hot peppers, eggplant, herbs and much more are sold to benefit the gardens. SCG supports educational endeavors with school garden tours, donations of seed and plants to local youth groups & schools and providing meeting space to other non-profits. A number of garden plots are set aside as designated gardens to grow fresh produce for the Micah 6 Food Bank.Near This Listing
