About Lake Highlands Community Garden

The Lake Highlands Community Garden is a first of its kind partnership between the City of Dallas and local residents to find a productive and beneficial use for unused property owned by the city. With the help of a very generous grant provide by the Organic Division of Scott's Miracle-Gro, in a few short months, the community garden has converted a long forgotten field transforming it into a productive organic garden supplying gardeners, family and friends with nutritious, tasty produce. Locally grown produces reduces the total carbon foot-print for food products. In addition, the produce can improve food security because the gardeners know where the food is grown. The community garden serves as a learning center demonstrating the proper use of organic products, utilizing “water-wise” methods for irrigating the crops and planting the right plant in the right space at the right time for maximum productivity. Being an organic garden, we do not use pesticides, herbicides or commercial fertilizers which harm our environment. Our Garden Now We recently received approval to expand our gardens and during our 1st anniversary, we celebrated the ground breaking of 54 additional individual plots, a donation garden to produce food to go directly to organizations in need, and bee hives and bee garden to keep our plants producing. Our garden is building the Lake Highlands community by bringing together people with diverse backgrounds to a central site to share in the joys and agonies of gardening in the Texas heat. Our gardeners are sharing with their children and grand children. We are also educating the next generation of gardeners and sharing with them our appreciation of the true taste of home grown vegetables.
