About Midsummer Farm

Mark and Barbara Laino raise Animal Welfare Approved laying hens at Midsummer Farm in Warwick, New York. The flock is made up of a variety of traditional breeds of chicken, including French Cuckoo Marans, Salmon Faverolle, and Speckled Sussex, so their eggs come in gorgeous shades of white, green, pink, and brown. Mark and Barbara explain that they treat the hens at Midsummer Farm are treated as family members and respected as living, feeling beings. “Our hens spend their days ranging and feeding on approximately three acres of organically-managed pastures, wild meadows, woodland and riparian areas, and are only housed at night for their own protection from possible predator,” says Barbara. “The hens are also allowed to set their own eggs and care for their own chicks, and are never culled as they get older.” Mark and Barbara try to ensure their birds experience a fulfilling life. They purposefully maintain a variety of ages in their flock, with young pullets mixing with mature hens, so that the hens are able to establish relationships and hierarchies that are normal to happy chickens. The Lainos have created a self-sustaining, circular farm environment that supports nature as well as the hen’s quality of life. Midsummer Farm offers both a winter and summer egg CSA share. The farm is open to the public in the spring and summer for events, and one of the highlights is the farm’s annual Organic Plant and Seedling Sale, where they sell all sorts of heirloom vegetable seedlings, hundreds of varieties of culinary and medicinal herb plants, and rare and fun annuals and perennials.
