Fonda San Miguel was founded in November 1975, in Austin as one of the first restaurant's in the United States to serve exclusively the Cuisines of Mexico (drawing on seven various regional cuisines in Mexico). By the late 1970’s Fonda San Miguel became a genuine hit, attracting customers from across the state and nationwide. At this time the first major remodeling project began. Huge hand-carved wooden doors from the state of Guanajuato welcomed guests to an expanded interior, replete with a patio bar with bright flowers and lush tropical plants and a dining room with lanterns from San Miguel de Allende. During this same period, the restaurant also developed a reputation for its distinctive Mexican artwork. Tom began collecting pieces by some of Mexico’s most renowned artists for display– Rufino, Tamayo, Francisco, Toledo, Arnulfo, Mendoza, Jose Fors, and many more. In the mid-eighties, Tom and Miguel introduced the hugely popular Hacienda Sunday Brunch Buffet, a beautiful display of banquet tables topped with fresh fruits, flowers, and a sumptuous selection of Mexican dishes that has continued to delight guests to this day. Today Fonda San Miguel is a prime destination restaurant, a place where culinary connoisseurs, art lovers, and visitors from all over the world can come to enjoy its distinctive cuisine.In the Fall of 2008 Fonda San Miguel created the stunning 100' x 60' organic garden that sits on the northeast side of the restaurant. The garden is one of the largest restaurant-gardens in Austin, and provides seasonal vegetables, fruits, and herbs that lend themselves well to the restaurant's variety of Mexican flavors and dishes. The site is a model of sustainable development. It was transformed from its former life as a grassy water collection zone and numerous recycled materials were used in construction. These materials include old billboards that became weed-blockers and water filters, and the beautiful wrought iron gates at the garden entrance that were originally in the interior of the restaurant in the 1970's.
