About Rocky River Farm

Located in western Chatham County, NC, Rocky River Farm is a small-scale, family owned farm that grows vegetables, fruit, and flowers without the use of chemical pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. Our goal is to grow the highest quality produce while caring for and managing the land responsibly. Some of our current practices include: growing and locally marketing a diversity of crops with over 80 different varieties; using cover crops that fix nitrogen and provide organic matter for the soil; drip irrigation; composting; and rotating crops through six fields to reduce pests and diseases. These practices allow the farm to balance a healthy food production system with long- term environmental sustainability. Picture Our vegetables and flowers start from seed in our passive solar greenhouse before being transplanted to the field. For many years our land was used for hay production, which we continue to grow and utilize as a weed-suppressing mulch in our beds. In addition to hay, we use woven weed fabric that also helps warm the soil in the spring. Our produce is mainly sold retail at two farmers markets, Pittsboro on Thursdays and Raleigh's Midtown on Saturdays, with some vegetables being marketed wholesale to local restaurants and caterers.
