About Persephone Farm

Persephone is a small scale farm with interests in deep ecology and sustainability rather than USDA organic certification. Its 13 acres include two cultivated acres, orchard, pastured poultry, open fields and habitat for birds and other wildlife. They aim to provide customers with a wide array of vegetables while maintaining a balanced ecosystem in their gardens. Persephone runs a CSA with pickups on the farm and on Bainbridge Island. They also sell at the Saturday farmers market on Bainbridge Island as well as supplying several local restaurants. They grow a variety of heirloom vegetables, herbs, fruit, flowers, and raise pastured chickens for eggs. They have trained many future farmers through their internship/apprenticeship program. Persephone Farm has been a pioneer in the Community Supported Agriculture movement -- they started with 11 subscribers in 1991, making them one of the longest-running programs in the country. From the first week of June through the end of October, subscribers receive an armload of fresh-picked seasonal vegetables, herbs and flowers from the farm. CSA subscribers can also choose to receive eggs from their hens as well as fruit, fresh-baked bread, cheese, wine, salmon and berries from other local producers. They aim to foster a deeper connection with all the foods they offer, through recipe sharing, seasonal celebrations and neighborly conversation at their weekly CSA pick-ups.
